Sundazed has really been leaning into surf recently, with last year's Chantays - A Dawning Sun, Surfin' the Great Lakes compilation, and The Vaqueros' 80 foot Wave. All three records were either entirely or in large part unreleased material, which certainly had me excited, but there was a fair share of disappointment. The Chantays record wasn't quite as surfy as the cover art might have you believe, and I just found the Kay Bank studio stuff to be generally lackluster. The Vaqueros record was pretty good, but a lot of it was vocal. I applaud Sundazed regardless for putting them out -- release everything! Let no surf go unheard! But I was admittedly a little worried what another unreleased surf record from a basically unknown band would pan out to be.

Oh no. It's pretty much June and I haven't finished the Gremmys. I got sidetracked, a little burnt out,time to shove this out the door. This is my category for things that felt worth mentioning for whatever reason or another. I often highlight outstanding EPs in this section, but since it's gotten this far behind and that's the most time-consuming part, I'm forgoing it. These are probably the least serious categories, a lot of them don't exist from year-to-year. Anyway, let's do it.

The Record Store Day Official List came out yesterday, and as much as I feel that Record Store Day is a great way to make record collecting a lot less fun, there ARE a number of surf-relevant releases this year. So if you're heading to the stores on April 16th, here are some things being released that day that you might be looking for.

I don't plan on making a habit out of this but both of these labels/distros have HUGE sales going on right now that are worth a look.

Disclaimer: I hate Record Store Day and Black Friday, and if it weren't for the fact that they make a lot of money from it, your record store would hate it too. However, it often does bring a few surf records into the world, and I've found in previous years that they're not exactly the hottest items, so you can probably drop by your store at your leisure rather than hop in line at 7 AM.
