Dead Rocks - Surf Explosão

While Brazil has no shortage of great surf groups, if you asked me to name the first that comes to mind, it would probably be the Dead Rocks. They've been around for about 10 years now and put out some great albums, my favorites being International Brazillian Surfs and One Million Dollar Surf Band. They're relentless promoters and have made their music easy to obtain across the world. And most importantly, who can forget those sharp outfits. After a brief Spaghetti Western stint on their...Read more

Record Store Day Black Friday

Disclaimer: I hate Record Store Day and Black Friday, and if it weren't for the fact that they make a lot of money from it, your record store would hate it too. However, it often does bring a few surf records into the world, and I've found in that they're not exactly the hottest items, so you can probably drop by your store at your leisure...Read more

Coffin Haze - Rehearsal Ritual 1

Coffin Haze refer to themselves as blackabilly deathsurf. I like it. This one's kind muddy recording-wise, I'm guessing it was live, but it's indeed dark, fast and very well played. For now it's streaming and purchaseable on bandcamp, and there's a cassette version on the way. That's about everything I can find on these guys based on their facebook page.Read more

Krektones - Megaladon

North Carolina's Krektones have a new 7" with 4 swaggering, saucy intrumentals full of danger. A lotta trumpet in here, which you don't see all that often, backed up by some raw and ragged guitar. You can preview it and purchase it on bandcampRead more

The Huaraches - Steal Second

Huaraches were nice to enough to send me a preview copy on this one so it's been played on the show and in my car for a few weeks now. Despite the fun, summery baseball album art, I get a pretty dark, ominous and dangerous vibe on this one. Perhaps it's not the music: I did first listen to it on the way back from a haunted house, the luchadore mask-wearing figure on the cover kinda freaks me out, and I've had a fear of getting hit in the face with a baseball since I watched it happen to a...Read more

The A-Phonics - With Friends

Oh man, this one flew under my radar, looks like it was released in late October, but I want it! Els A-Phonics have released some really upbeat, creative (and well produced) surf and they've teamed up with some of the best: Mike Barbwire, Nokie Edwards, Deke Dickerson, Jon Blair and others.Read more

WaveSauce - Stop Go

Surf has a long and great history with sci-fi and with it comes a flirtation with the mysterious sci-fi instrument the Theremin: the magical instrument meant to be heard, not touched. While others use it sparingly, WaveSauce is the only surf group I've heard that COMMITS to this device's otherworldly moans (though Messer Chups comes close (they collaborated with Leon Theremin's granddaughter!)).Read more

Speedball Jr 7"

Belgium's Speedball Jr play some of my favorite aggro-surf songs, so it's cool to see them join a member of everybody's favorite pre-punk group The Stooges to play some Stooges classics: "Loose" and "1970".

They've got a preview of Loose up on Youtube, and you can grab the real thing over at DrunkabillyRead more

Ferni and the Vascos - Strings and Waves

Here's a nice little one-man project out of Spain with a good mix of mood and tempo. I ran his thoughts about his music through Google Translate and there was one part that I really liked despite Google's obvious mistakes:Read more

The Shockwave - Contact from Space

More from Finland! Double Crown was so excited about The Shockwave's last release that they brought them onto their roster. Mine's on the way through the Double Crown Music Club and will be my first exposure to them, but they've put up a live preview of some of the tracks on this album over on the youtubeRead more

Aloha Screwdriver - One Too Many

Just lookit that cover art! I love it! Aloha Screwdriver have released a new 4-song EP on purple and black vinyl. They've got one of the tracks on soundcloud and it's nice and punchy.Read more

Sun Conscious

Sun Conscious is a two-some playing pretty out-there semi-surf. Think Sun City Girls/Sir Richard Bishop and I think you're on the right track. It's slow, moody, but there's plenty in there for surf fans to grab onto.Read more

The Charades - All Around the World With

Just as the tradition of surf rock continues today, so does the very similar tradition of Rautalanka continue in Finland. What especially impresses me is that despite how thin and glassy a lot of the 60's rautalanka can be, modern groups seem to all be very slick and prettty. Based on the samples I've heard, you can say the same here. There's a few preview tracks when you hit Read More.Read more

Hella Vader - The Frig*O*Riffic Fuzz Sounds of...

Ideally I would have discovered this before Halloween but Hella Vader likes to date all their releases to 1964 in Bandcamp so it passed me by. But if you want to turn back the clock a week, this should be pretty excellent listening. Hella Vader is never really straightforward, but this is one long cut-up of previous songs and new ones and general guitar weirdness that definitely would have weirded the kids out when they knocked on the door.Read more

Los Cuchillos - Isla Macabro!

Green Cookie's had this streaming for a while, but I believe today is the official release date! I absolutely love the art on this one by Shawn DIckinson who did The Hangee V/Angry Breed 7", some Boss Fink art and an upcoming Speedball JR 7". I've only given it about one good listen but it's tough, fuzzy at times, and all around pretty fun. Another fine addition to the Green Cookie roster!Read more

Freckles - Freckles

Freckles is fronted by professional skateboarder Josh Harmony, who appears to take his music just as seriously as his skateboarding. I'm witholding a joke about shredding in two ways. Anyway, a nice trad sound and it's completely free on Noisetrade, though there's an option to leave a tip.Read more

Surfin' Jack Flash

Joining the ranks of David Bowie and The Clash, you can now hear your favorite Rolling Stones songs surf-style. Of course, if your favorite Stones song is "Paint It Black" you've already had this luxury, but now you can hear a surf cover of the Rolling Stones' cover of Irma Thomas' cover of Kai Winding. Full tracklist follows...Read more

The Sloptones - Demon Haunted

The Sloptones just snuck onto my radar recently with their EP Noir City but their 3-song EPs sound pretty promising so far. Each of the 3 songs on Demon Haunted are pretty great horror surf with all the ugly chords you want from that genre. They've upped their price on this one to a whole $1 to download.... and with free streaming on bandcamp when you click to read more.Read more

Cutback - Surfers' Journey

Would have posted this earlier but didn't realize it was officially out. Cutback definitely have roots in trad surf music but with a bit of a progressive edge to it. I get an Insect Surfers vibe. If I'm not mistaken, this is their first proper LP, though they've had some recorded demos.

They have samples of each track up on their  where you can order the...Read more

Bandcamp groups are weird. Here we have a group with a name and cover art that suggest nothing spooky, playing subdued Halloween songs with "jive" in the title, plus vintage sound clips of horror films. I know nothing about this band, but I'm digging it all the same.
