The Splashdowns release Rocket Tales

The Splashdowns - Rocket Tales

Splashdown is when a spacecraft hits the water upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere. When astronauts go from space to surf.  It's a great name for the splashdowns, who mix a semi-trad surf sound with a sense of cosmic wonder and adventure. Think  rather than Man... or Astro-man?, with a non-aggressive, thoughtful surf approach and not much reliance on out-there effects. There's a surprising amount of variety too.

New videos from Johnny Carbonaras and Viernes De Hongos

I pointed out the strangeness of Johnny Carbonaras' album cover in my  and they've stayed pretty weird here - and they're consistent in their fascination with piles of stringy stuff. Today they're not so much knitting with it, but eating it.

Meanwhile, Viernes de Hongos have gone for a bit of an Ed Wood vibe in their video - and maybe even a smidge of Beastie Boys. Pretty silly stuff

Urban Surf Kings release Penguin or Robot? EP

Urban Surf Kings - Penguin or Robot?

Personally, I choose robot. I love robots. Urban Surf Kings have been churning out releases like clockwork for over 15 years now, including side projects from Rev. Hank, but I believe this one has been in the works for a good while (their starts January 1st 2013). The format here is a little different: 4-song 7" vinyl that includes a download code for those 4 songs plus another 4. So 8 songs total, but only 4 on digital media.

Kenny Ahern's surf bagpipe covers have restored my faith in the internet

For nearly two years, Kenny Ahern has been pumping out covers of surf songs with the main melody on bagpipes and putting them on Youtube. The joke isn't lost on him, and like all of us endeavoring to do something stupid, he pushes the stupidity as far as he can, creating elaborate backgrounds and wearing outlandish costumes (usually half related to the song and half some form of scottish garb) while he otherwise plainly presents his craft.
