Let’s jump straight to what’s important here: percussion.
A lot of bands reach for that spy sound, and while some try to get there via mimicry of John Barry, the real key isn’t in what you’re twangin’ but what you’re bangin’. Maeds Dominos sometimes have the snare restricted to surbeat, but you can expect it to be joined by bongos, glockenspiel (?), tambourine… it’s extremely well done and expands the whole feeling of the songs beyond mere guitar aggression.
But if you’re a surf fan guitar is likely pretty important, and even if it doesn’t always feel like it’s taking center stage, it’s damn good. Not only does it have a great drippy sound, but it’s changing and reacting to the needs of the song. There’s some interesting trickery going on but it serves a purpose.
Though this isn’t their debut, this was the first time this band has slipped onto my radar and I’m very impressed. This is a competent, confident EP, and while surf is often its at its best when it’s stupid and sloppy, this is a testament to surf played smart and patient.
